About 3 weeks ago my mother brought my 2 children home from TSC, each with a pekin in hand. I grumbled but figured whatever. Now wonder of all wonders, I have become very attached to one of them, named Pizza. He comes when I call, follows me around and likes to sit in my lap. Not exactly healthy for a farm duck, but I figure I'm allowed a pet every now and then. Today he started acting funny, like his one side was a little weak, he's been VERY mellow, much more so than normal. He doesn't want to walk, he can without a limp but doesn't seem to want to. When I picked him up earlier he started to drool, actualy drool not just too much water. He seems to be breathing harder than normal and is tired. He has no sores or cuts I can find on his feet or legs, and he gets Dumor non-medicated chick starter plus brewer's yeast every day. I started giving them greens (salad greens) and frozen peas last week as a treat a few nights a week and when it's warm they go out and play in their yard for a while. My husband thinks he's just getting fat and itchy because all his adult feathers are coming in under his down. I think the word spoiled was thrown in there too, but I just ignore that, lol. Could it just be respitory issues? Like maybe he needs a bath to clear his nose? Or am I feeding him wrong? He's allowed free choice when he eats. Any input would be welcome, like I said I have become attached to the little bugger and want him to survive. Would poly-vi-sol help?

At 3 weeks start him on the grower/finisher. The starter has too much protein.

Watch him. If you think he's coming down with a cold, I just found a miracle product. Its called VetRx. You can usually find it at your local farm stores but TSC doesn't carry it. I got mine at a local farmers co-op.

Make sure you get the kind for poultry. I have a very sick gosling and almost overnight she's so much better. Not 100% but definitely better than she was! You put a drop in each nostril and a drop down their throat. She's doing marvelously today compared to yesterday.

Good luck!

It cannot hurt for the duckling to have a chance to clean his nostrils and eyes regularly (daily if possible). Drooling, lethargy, those sound serious enough to try something, the VetRX may help, some vitamins may help. I had my ducklings on 18% protein at 3 weeks, by cutting the feed with rolled (not instant) oats.

Is he getting grit? Staying warm enough? Any chance the feed is moldy?

He gets grit, I am going to try and ensure he actually eats some though, he spit out a pea at me today that wouldn't go down. The food isn't moldy and at 3 weeks old their supposed to be at about 80 degrees, right? If so then he's warm enough. I noticed today his right knee (do they have knees?) is swollen but he is eating and drinking just fine and other than the leg seems to be doing fine today. I am going to get vetrx and straight niacin today for him, see if that helps.

Is the grit free choice or a tiny bit in his food? Holderread wrote about a case of a silly duckling filling up on grit and starving. Those little critters get into the most amazing trouble sometimes . . . just unbelievable (I think most duck people have a story or two - I remember one whose duckling got into the waterer she had made out of a one liter bottle. Yes, all the way into the bottle.)
