I need some help on my rooster. Three days ago a possum got in the coop and killed my baby and injured my rooster it ripped his head open down to his skull and half of his comb is ripped off his head but still attached to the front half of it. The part that's ripped off is now black and I fear for gangreen. It also punctured his left eye so he is now blind in that eye and I worry it to could get infected. can I cut off the part of his comb affected? How do I do that? And anything to do for his eye? He is eating and drinking as well as still mounting his hens.

I would not cut it off---I would clean it and spray it with blu-kote----I always use Blu-kote and it keep the infection down and every chicken I have had with torn skin, down to the skull has healed fine. I keep it out their eyes---and respray lightly ever 2 or 3 days.

Thank you but I don't have any blu kote. I'm loading some pics to show the damage I'm talking about. Would silvaden salve help

Looks like bruising. Sniff the wound. You can smell rot pretty easy. If it doesn't stink like decay you're good. Def clean the bites and thin coat some of antibiotic ointment if you can. Just let him heal and keep the wounds clean. Clean with a clean rag with warm water. The warm water helps keep blood flowing to open wound. It will drain.. That's a good thing. Draining and some blood is OK. Just means he's healing.

If the area gets really hot, he stops eating, lethargic. Signs of an infection. I'm not sure what you can give him as far as antibiotics. Good luck and I hope he heals okay.
