Not sure if this is the right place for this or not but it seemed like the best place.

I have a somewhat urgent situation with my 1 year old male Great Pyrenees, Newt. He's an excellent guardian and has kept everything away from our birds in the time he's been on the job. He seems to be a typical Pyr, roaming around, barking at things and just being large, floppy and goofy. He's a sweet guy. He works in a team with my Catahoula/Pyr mix who pays attention to the in ground fence system and stays where she's supposed to be with no issues. This was installed after the neighbor shot at her on my property. He used to pay attention to it too until he learned that if he runs fast enough, the shock is fast and he can go on about his business. We've redone the training several times and it will stick with him for a few days and he's right back to wandering. I've had to resort to penning him up with my ducks sometimes to make sure he doesn't roam where he isn't supposed to. We've turned up the intensity of the collar, shaved his neck so it makes better connection, everything we can think of. Neighbor turned up today and told my husband he WILL shoot him if he sees him out again. We've tried talking to the neighbors but they've been unreasonable for 30+ years and it doesn't seem like they're going to start being neighborly any time soon so I'm left with few options. Right now, he's on a 40 foot run between the pens. Went around and talked to other neighbors tonight and learned that everyone has had the same kind of issues with this guy including another LGD owner down the road who chose to pen up their Pyr. I'll do that or keep him on the run if it comes down to it but it's not fair to him. He needs to be somewhere he can roam and do his job without someone trying to shoot him.

I could understand if he were mean or was being aggressive but he's not. He doesn't bother their horses, doesn't dig out their trash or dig holes in their yard, nothing like that. He walks and barks. One neighbor likes that he's around to keep the skunks, raccoons and possums away but in this situation, the alcoholic trigger happy neighbor wins. I can't have him getting shot and I can't stand a dog being tied up, especially a dog like him. So he needs a new home with lots of room to run around and stuff to bark at.

Details on Newt. He was born December 21, 2016. He came from a poultry friendly environment with two working parents in charge of all manner of livestock. He's been with us since February of 2017 and has been around chickens, ducks, geese and peafowl since we brought him home. He never attempted to chase or "play with" any of the birds. He breaks up scuffles between birds in the day time and stays close to the pens at night, barking at anything that might want to come start something. He has snagged eggs in the past but it is pretty rare and doesn't go into nests to get them; just if we drop one or a hen lays one out in the open he seems to see it as fair game. He's never rough with the birds and likes to share his dog food with them. He lets them walk all over him and peck him or harass him with no complaints. I had one young gander that loved to bite him any chance he got and Newt would always sit there and take it. He is as poultry friendly as they get. On the advice of my vet, he is not neutered. I've heard conflicting theories about neutering versus intact on LGD's and my vet said it doesn't have any effect on their ability to do their job or stop them from wandering as it's what they've been bred to do. He has been regularly dewormed and is up to date on his rabies vaccine. Rabies shot will be due in October. Rehoming fee is negotiable. I'm near the Tulsa/Stillwater area.

Will add pics tomorrow when it's daylight.

Hi, I hope you find him a home! Our neighbor had a Pyrenees that would come to see us every day. I loved his visits, but neighbor was frustrated that he couldn't keep him home and asked me not to give him attention any more. Not staying home would be the issue. I felt bad ignoring him and seeing how that hurt his feelings. Eventually he wandered somewhere else and got shot, limped home, but died.

Good luck!

I say yes, my wife said no. I wish you the best there must be a breed specific rescue organization you can find online for this great flock protection breed. Pyrenees are famous in Italy as flock protectors, however, in my part of the world he might not do well.

I have watched multiple specials on German Tv regarding them. They are truly exceptional flock protectors!

I'm like AllenK@new2this, I'd say yes, my husband will say no. I understand his reasons but think it unfair. Our neighbor has mix breed pits. They have been coming to our property killing our chickens. Total killed by neighbors dogs just rose to 9. At first they harassed our chickens through the run, then tore up the run to get 3, it gradually rose. The first instance, we did tell them of this. Talking to them was like talking to an operated system that doesn't recognize voice commands. Once, the mama pit came by next to the repaired run. Hubby was outside, and the pit growled and approached him. He has to shoot her and killed her. Just a few days ago, two of their dogs came by an was harassing my other pen of chickens. By then 2 already came up missing and found paw tracks. I'm a lousy shot but scared them away. So, I understand his reason being that they may just shoot any LGD we get because of this.

I do wish you the best and still wished to have a LGD one day. Hope you find him a good home.

Just a couple of questions if you don't mind:
Do you think Newt will be able to handle being without his buddy once he is in a new home? Just thinking about any separation anxiety, although it might be impossible to assess until he finds his next home.

Also, does Newt respect livestock fencing, i.e. 5' no-climb horse fencing and 4' goat mesh fencing? Is he a fence climber or a digger?

Another question, with all his roaming, how does Newt find time to defend his chickens? Or does he wander primarily at night or just occasionally? Just trying to get a better picture of his lifestyle. Thanks!

I think he would be ok without her as long as he's got someone to play wrestle with and some humans around to beg pets from. He doesn't seem too concerned about her when he can't see her. I haven't noticed any fence digging from him but we've got barbed wire that he can just walk through. Only digging he ever does it digging into dirt for a cool spot.

I'd LOVE to do some no-climb horse fence bec/ that would keep him and my birds here where they wouldn't be shot but the property we live on is still technically my parents and Dad is opposed to it because he thinks the wind will blow the dirt over and make it mound up and be hard to maintain. That has been discussed at length and he won't budge on it.

He only roams during the day, staying close to the pens at night. Farthest he goes at night is up to my parents house which is only about 500 feet away. He goes up there and barks then runs back here and barks all night long.

They are great at their job for sure! Thanks for the tip about the rescue, that's my next step if I can't find him a suitable placement myself.

That's sad! Pyrs are such good dogs. After talking to other neighbors, we've learned that we're not the only ones being threatened and having a dog accused of chasing horses. There are several others. We all agree that we're all fine with each others dogs, we all know all the other dogs but this one family is just harassing everyone from the sound of it. Thanks for the local thread tip, didn't even think about that. Ill post there and hope I can find a suitable home for him where he can be safe without having to be tied up.
