Poultry Veterinarian

bigbird wrote: She had an injury about 6 months ago that we are still dealing with. We have literally, with the help if a vet, kitchen sinked her. From what we have figure out, she missed her perch, and came down on a broken off piece of a branch, cutting open the area under her wing, and above her leg. For months, she was stitched, sprayed with veteryecin, and given medicam. The wound itself, which was horribly extensive, has healed. There is still a gap, and the joint is exposed and damaged. Apparently here is a tear in the joint capsule. I was wanting to know if anyone has heard of, or used Collasate? It is a wound healer that we are wanting to use with the hopes it will eventually bond the damaged tissue. Or, if anyone has any other thoughts, suggestions or answers to this. I can't imagine that the anatomy of a turkey would be all that different from an exotic 3k parrot. Per above post, I guess I shouldn't be assuming though.

! Lol I'm posting pictures, which IMO are really gross, and I hope no one is offended. She does not act like she is in any pain. If she was, I wouldn't even be writing this post, I would have had her euthanized. Her appetite is good. Thank you all for your time and consideration. I just think that if I can find a vet, or poultry keeper ANYWHERE who may have experience with treating this, or have an idea, they could give me the information I need to pass along to her dog & cat vet. Still working on pictures, sorry. Can't get them to upload.
Answer to the Q: re: `Dr. D. Leach, yes: Below is the tech, the doc & "some guy with a rooster" ;) If you haven't already posted in the Forum Feedback about the uploading problem with pics, please do (be specific - hardware/operating system/browser/did you clear history/cache/try a different browser?). There have been some glitches lately, but I thought they were pretty much resolved (guess not :( ). Depending on the exact location of the wound (movement at a joint might slow/prevent granulation of tissue, regardless), I'd think the Collasate Silver would be worth trying (changing out and keeping clean will be a challenge but your info indicates you;ve got that in hand). Have used dextranomer (debrisan) in draining ulcerations,(humans) - just might be handy to have on hand if infection appears and wound suppurates. Here is a post about our 9 yr. old Slate hen's ugly wound/treatment for breeding laceration(s): https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/919407/female-injured#post_13991342 . Of course, unlike open path to a joint, there was little chance for osteomyelitis. (they ARE pretty tough birds). Does KY have a Raptor rehab center associated with the Dept. of Natural Resources? A chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation? metropolitan zoo? - all good places to call to hunt info on vets down. If you like, one of those 3k parrot docs authored a pretty thorough book that can be downloaded in full and saved: Avian Medicine Principles & Application, Harrison (1138 pages) with a chapter on galliformes/surgery/etc. (primarily focused on `companion$$$' birds, but most info applies to all: http://www.mfgouldianfinches.com/files/AvianMedicinePrinciplesandApplicationbook.pdf Another reference on wounds and dressings that I've found helpful: http://www.worldwidewounds.com/ And,if you want go there: Atlas of the Domestic Turkey: Myology & Osteology: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/156131/atomic-turkeys
