I have 14 Narragansett poults that I recently hatched, they were fine until I moved them to their new brooder, the brooder has wire mesh flooring,it measures 6' L x 2' W x 2' H,the poults are 2 weeks old, after 2 days in the brooder, they started pecking at their own feet and the webbing between their toes, the smallest poult in the batch got the worst of it after one of the bigger poults pecked one of his toes so hard it left his small toe nail hanging from just a piece of skin,so I had to amputate the piece of toe bandage him and separate him from the rest, I am seeing this behavior in three or four poults only, but they are pecking themselves to the point that their feet are bleeding, has anyone ever had this behavior,I have them on Purina Flock Raiser,22 percent protein, At first I thought it was the wire floor so I laid down newspaper, when I was brooding them in the cardboard box I was using pine shavings yet I discontinued the shavings because one of the poults was choking on a huge piece of shaving ,luckily I caught him in time! I am using a 60 watt white bulb for heat, which is keeping them warm enough yet the white light I think might be the culprit,if anyone has had this problem please let me know any solutions, thanks.
