Pre-Assembled Coop

Thanks everyone for all the feedback!! I am a brand new chicken mom wanna-be. I don't have any chickens yet. I want to cover all my bases first before I commit. My husband is very good at building things so I know I can recruit him to build for me. :thumbsup

I know for sure that I want to start out with at least 6 hens and at least one rooster. I already know what type I want. Either Buff or Lavender Orpington and Barred Rock. 🐥🐣🐤

I found some build your own coop plans from various sites including this one. Again, thanks everyone for your feedback! Ya'll are awesome :D

Oh yeah if you have even a tiny bit of building skill you can build a great coop! Good luck! Just don’t get super excited and order your chicks before the coop is done. Plan to take longer to build it than you think. Better to be safe, speaking from experience.

My husband does actually and I plan on using him. I do need to know what kind of materials to use (bedding, etc) the layout of the coop, how to "pest" proof it, etc.

Of course, I am doing all the research first and making sure I have a nice coop built and ready to go; I'd even like to have a brooder as well. I don't wanna rely on the store for my ladies and roo's!

That's the right way to do it. Searching this forum really helped me get my chicks off to a good start. I made the mistake of ordering a prefab coop, even though I'm handy at building. It was listed for 10-12 bantams, or 8 standard breeds. It was tiny at only 9 square feet. I ended up selling it to someone for a quarentine coop and building my own. I got most of my money back, but I wish I hadn't wasted the time and built from the beginning. Good luck with everything.

Beware the plans out there, many of them are as bad or worse than the prefabs.
