Predators in the Midwest

I assume none of your neighbors own dogs? They will range pretty far if they are not trained to stay at home.

If you have mink in your area you will also want to watch out for them. They can squeeze into some pretty small spaces. Also rats. The big Norway/Wharf rats can kill pullets and will nibble on the toes of mature chickens.

Glad I could make you laugh David. I'm from the West Coast, so the predators are a little different out here.

No neighbors or Minks either, but thanks for the Mink warning, I had no clue.

Feral dogs are everywhere in the country, just like cats! City people like to dump their problem "pets" out in the country where they think they will have a better life!! Trust me, feral dogs form packs and they can wreak pure devastation on livestock, which includes chickens!!!! Just ask my neighbor 1/4 mile away!!!

I am not trying to be argumentative but dogs can be your worst nightmare for your chickens because if your birds are not properly protected the dogs will kill each and everyone of them!! I am sorry if I offended you as it was not my intent!!

Fox. bobcat. cougar. feral house cat. feral dog. Rats. coyote. weasel. Skunk. Bear. Basically check with the DNR or animal control and see what kind if animals are around you. Any of them that are carnivores or omnivores are a problem for chickens.

Are you aware your profile states you are in Indiana?

We live out in the country, so dogs won't be a problem. Coyotes possibly?

I agree with dogs being the worst predator. I have had dogs come to my place and try to get my chickens that I have no idea where they came from or where they went back to. The only chickens I have lost to predators I lost to my own dogs!
