I just purchased a breeding pair. I have a question concerning a nesting area. What reading that I have done indicates that the hen prefers to be hidden to lay. I have them in a run and coop. no nesting boxes in the coop. so I picked up a barrel today to make a nesting area. so it's a 55 gal drum what should I do with it. I saw post of people using them. do I lay it on its side and cut the end off. or do I leave it upright and cut the side out . do I put leaves or straw in it? sorry for the long post I'm new to turkeys .
should I put the barrel in the coop or in the run?

Put the barrel in the coop with straw in it.
Cut one end off, put it on it's side, but leave the bottom part of the open end intact so she can jump in and be secluded.

IN other words don't take off the entire end of the barrel. Leave enough room for her to get in and out.

And you could always put a small hole on top so you can sneak a peek every once in a while.
