I heard on the Chicken Whisperer that he digs down about 6 inches (till) and then rakes out the loose dirt, then adds 1/4 to 1/2 inch of lime and then chipped wood (5 inches). He also replaces it 2 or 3 times a year. Do you know if this material when taken out after a few months is good for compost? Does the lime matter in a negative way?
 
Seems like a lot of work. I just use the ground as it comes, and add some sand.
