Hi, my name is Liz, i live in Sparta, New Jersey, USA. I live on 4 acres of woods, so i am trying to milk as much from the land as possible. I'm hoping the conditions here are OK for raising chickens.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm very new! I don't have any yet, but planning to build a coop and get chickens asap.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
zero!

(3) What breeds do you have?
None

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google -- trying to learn as much as i can.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Anything outdoors - going for walks, gardening, reading, spiritual life

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have an office job that keeps me behind a computer, which is why i can't wait to have some backyard chickens and a new hobby. I have a 17 month old little girl who is going to love collecting eggs one day!

Hello Liz and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us.

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

I would Google breeds to see what your looking for.. each breed lays a certain amount of eggs yearly, different egg shell color and size, and each chicken breed has its own type of personality and breed traits. Also check to make sure the breeds you are interested in are going to be hardy for your weather.. some are better in heat, some cold and others can tolerate both heat and cold just fine.

If you type into Google 'Chicken breeds' a long list will show up at the top and tell you all of these points and show pictures for each breed :)

Greetings and welcome to BYC Liz! So glad you joined us. It probably seems pretty daunting right now, but it does get easier and more fun as you go along. After a day spent behind a computer, I think you'll enjoy some live time with your birds. They can be a real stress reliever. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!
