We went to a show yesterday and the birds did well, but I, as a mom, not so good.
Being a horse show girl and new to the poultry show scene, I signed my 6 year old son up for showmanship. I put him in Junior thinking that was for the little guys. Well, novice is for the little guys and junior is for older kids, then intermediate and so on. The judge saw the error and asked him how old he was but still made him go into the older kid class any way. I didn't really know any better or I would have straightened it out right there. So my poor boy went against the big guys. He only was able to answer a few questions, but the ones he answered he answered correctly. Yeah for that! I just feel so bad for him. He would have done so much better in the younger class. I could just kick my self. Ho well, live and learn.
Our Welsummers did well again, Res. Champion Continental, and Best of Breed. The Jersey Giants also did well, with my blue cockerel getting Reserve Variety and Res. of Breed. One of the black pullets got Best Variety and Best of Breed. On the back of the pullets card was written "Champ LF by JR", but we didn't get a ribbon for that. Maybe because it was on the back, they forgot.
So here are the pictures.

Well, I think that's a great picture of your son and the chicken.

I thank you for posting it!!!!

I love kids!! I have a 2 yr. old granddaughter who is learning about chickens.

I hope your little guy enjoyed the showing part regardless of class and he can continue. Those pictures of him are priceless, I'd have to frame the last one with him and the big roo. Cute Cute Cute,

Congrats Mom!

He'll probably do great, mix ups actually help and competing outside your age group isn't a bad thing. My first dog show I showed with the adults. I was ten, my three puppies placed twice - I was totally hooked.

And really nice looking birds even damp

At the shows I've been to IF there was an entry form for showmanship it asked the age or listed the age groupings. Most of hte time it is a verbal call of something like "Showmanship for all kids who are 7 & under, report to ..." That's a shame that they didn't put your son in the correct group--or maybe they had already done that group, and they were letting him participate where he could?

What a cutie pie! Look at it this way - you can be proud that he held his own, and imagine how ahead of his peers he will be for his NEXT show because of this experience! Congratulations on his (and your) awards!

He was up with the right group at first and the judge asked him his name and how old he was so Loren told him and then the judge told Loren he was signed up for the wrong class. The judge said he was signed up for the Junior class so that was the class he needed to be in.
