Best way to prevent coccidia in silkies? I’ve always used corrid or medicated feed with my other chickens but I’m aware you aren’t supposed to use that with silkies. Suggestions? I only have full grown silkies right now so just researching before I hatch any eggs.

Where did you hear that? Do you have a link so I can read it in context. On the face of it, that does not make sense but I'd really like to read it in context.

Coccidia are the bugs that can cause Coccidiosis in chickens. I do not want to prevent them from being exposed to coccidia. I want them to develop immunity to that bug so they are protected against Coccidiosis.

If chicks are exposed to that bug for two to three weeks they develop an immunity to its effects. They will still be carriers of that bug and can spread it to other chickens but will not get sick because of it.

The best way to prevent the problem is to keep the brooder dry and the drinking water clean. A small amount of coccidia is not a problem, they will not get sick from that. The problem is when the numbers get high enough to overwhelm their system. If the brooder is wet the coccidia will multiply on that so keep the brooder dry. If the water gets dirty they can multiply in that. So keep the brooder dry and the water clean.

Learn the symptoms of Coccidiosis. If it shows up, treat it.
