I know most of the country is sweltering right now, as we are here in CT, but hubby is about 1/2 through building our coop/run. Trying to decide on a water system, one that isn't messy/drippy, easy to use, etc. So, brings me to a few questions:

1. Can I use a rain barrel - rain water - for my chicks? Thinking about summer time in run area.

2. To prevent freezing in winter, could I put a low wattage aquarium heater in a five gallon bucket type waterer that I will keep inside the coop?

I didn't really want to go to the expense of running electricity out to the coop but am concerned about low temps and not enough light in the winter.

What does any else here in the Northeast do about this??

Thanks for the help!!

I use a bird bath heater. Built like a tank. Works well.
