Pricing out birds?

Hi everyone,

just wondering if anyone has any tips on pricing out birds? In this case purebred Red Leg Partridges?

I have a trio for sale(last years hatch) but no clue what to charge for them....... got a serious mental block on that one.

Especially because they may be the only purebred red legs up here in canada(checked gamebird/ornamental fowl organisations across canada and none could find breeders in their databases) and I have nothing and no one to compare to. US prices seem to vary a lot and in Europe they downright give them away.

I don't want to rip anyone off but at the same time I don't want to be super cheap either, I put a lot of money and effort into getting them here.

I looked up other varieties of partridges(huns and barbary) and range from $45-$80 a pair, but they are relatively common.

How could I figure out a fair price for these? I have lots of people interested but cannot think of a price.

Any tips or hints out there to make this easier?

I sold 20 full grown chukars in August for $10.00 a bird. I thought I got a good price sinse I've seen them sell for as low as $8.00. Don't know about Canada but these were Arizona prices.

Chukar are very commom here(every farm on the praries breeds them for hunting) and sold between $5 and $10 a bird, so I cannot use their prices as a reference, thats why i went with the more "exotic" varieties of partridge for my research.

I would go with what you bought them for (your breeders) But then again you said you put in a lot of time and money getting them here so Im assuming they are imported in which case try to put them in some type auction. Let those interested parties all know about it and may the highest bidder win.

Yea, they are imported since I could not locate any breeders in Canada. I don't wanna go by how much I paid for my breeders, cause then no one will buy them, I doubt many are as crazy as I am.

The Auction Idea is good, but we don't have any animal auctions here and my customers are never local.... Online there are no auction websites for Canada other then eBay and they don't allow live animals being auctioned.

Kudos to you for bringing in some pure red-legs!! Not many left, most are passed off as chukars or not much attention paid to them. I've seen some ads in the US for French Red-Legs from $20 to 40 a pair. If I were to purchase, I would certainly ask for pics and background info. If you got some imports, you should be able to find someone who would give you a good price. Hell, if I had the money, I'd take them (just turned down some quail today, sucks being broke)!! Would you be willing to ship to the states? I do know a couple of folks who might be interested in fresh lines and would keep them pure.

Just curious, where did you import them from?

sorry, didn't get a notice that someone posted on this topic.

I actually got mine from a breeder in Idaho. Went there and had a good look at his birds(that was a delightful 2 days driving thru a lovely state! but weather sucked.....), and he has some beautiful redlegs. His original stock he imported as hatching eggs from France. Talked to him 4 or 5 yrs ago first time, but didn't get any birds until last year.
One thing is clear, they are a whole lot nastier as chicks then chukars are.......

Beautiful markings on them and very thrifty little buggers. I really like them. I ended up with 12 birds and just sorted them out and ended up with 4 trios. I know trios aren't the best way to keep them but I have them in big aviaries so we will see how they do.
Here is a pic of one trio. The male(left) has really nice neck markings so I paired him with a couple hens that have a bit messier neck pearls so i am hoping for some really nice chicks.
