I have two chickens that free range and sleep in a coop. My rooster suddenly got lethargic, legs don't support him well. He ate and drank last night but wouldn't walk to coop himself- I carried him there and he walked inside. This morning he wouldn't stand; I carried him inside and he's in a hay filled cage in my house. I don't think he's passing anything. I also think he didn't have any water for 1 or 2 days, just snow. He's 5 or six yrs old. He's just lying down with eyes closed- if I say his name he'll open his eyes. He has no visible discharge or breathing issues. I just gave him a few eye droppers of water with home made electrolyte solution. Any advice? Also, is it ok to leave the hen by herself in the coop overnight with plenty of hay to snuggle in, or should I catch her and bring her in as well? She seems perfectly fine- but I have a friend that said she'd freeze to death by herself. I'm in NY state and it probably gets into the single digits at night. I've had these 2 birds for years but am woefully ignorant. Help, please!

your guy is just very chilled and being in the house for a day or two should help him. If you have a heat lamp, you might want to put it in a corner of his cage for a bit - make sure he does not get too hot and he can move from the heat if needed.

I would bring your girl in - he will be lonely and so will she. At night she will be very cold unless your coop is heated.

Try scrambling some eggs and offer to your roo. Also polyvisol (baby liquid vitamins) dribbled along his beak will help him.

Please keep us updated.

Thanks for the advice...just leaving for the pharmacy to get the polyvisol. I'll definitely keep you posted.

Happy Trails

By some wacky twist of fate, I managed to buy Polyvisol without iron...what are the odds? He seems much better- not constipated, sitting quietly but very alert, drinking eagerly and occasionally nibbling some oatmeal and blueberries. My fingers are crossed- the silly hen wouldn't be caught but she has a whole bale of fluffed up hay to sleep inside. Thank you again...here's hoping for the best...
