About 2 - 2 1/2 weeks ago I found one chick acting like she was too hot. I brought her in the house and put her in with some younger chicks, she would have been about 8 weeks then. I have taken her out of the house several times and tried to get her to stay with the other chicks her age but she doesn't seem interested at all. Today, I was going to be a little more strict with her but she kept getting under my feet and running when any of the other chicks or chickens came in her direction. I have a bench seat out by the coop where we can sit and watch them and she would run under the seat, behind my legs and then want back up in my lap.
Now, I do not sit and hold this chick all the time but I do pay her a lot of attention when I am cleaning and feeding the baby chicks. I have the baby chicks in clear totes on a table and Princess can hop out of the tote if she chooses to. She doesn't. Yesterday, I took the older babies out to the coop and stayed to watch that the other chicks didn't beat them up, so I spent a lot of time with her. When I came back in I put her in with the littlest chicks and she hopped out of there. I had put 2 of the older chicks in with the younger ones because I want to keep track of them. Their mother was the BO that was killed and I want to know what they will look like when they grow up. Anyways, when I checked on them later, I found the older babies back in the other tote with Princess. I left all 3 of them there.
I am very much in love with this chick, she is the first and only one that will/has come to me for attention. I do enjoy that very much but she's not a people and as much as I love the attention, she can't stay in the house. I have dogs and it's just too much risk for her if she starts running around inside. Most of the dogs wouldn't bother her but one loves to chase the chickens if she gets out and 2 would probably kill her if they could get ahold of her.
I wasn't worried until she acted like she's not a chicken anymore. What can I do with Princess? How can I safely re-introduce her to the flock?
