I am sure there are gender based traits that are the same for all breeds of chickens. I just don't know them.

What should all us new people be looking for with our chicks? Combs, wattles, feathers, crowing. I know thats the list but what exactly are we looking for with those things.

What is a saddle feather? People mention pointy and rounded feathers but its just not clear to me what to look for.

When should they be crowing?

At what age is a well developed comb your hint that you have a Roo.

My paranoia at this point is I am going to make a hen into noodle soup because I don't understand these gender based traits. Any hints to becoming a confident gender guesser would be appreciated. I'm getting a bit tired of sitting on my hands and knees crowing at my 17 week old chicks trying to make the iffy ones speak to me.

btw at 17 weeks I have not had any making a full blown crow. I had one that made a crow like sound 3 weeks ago and not a peep since. This sexing my crowing thing is getting annoying.

hope this diagram i found helps some!

i think at 17 weeks if they haven't crowed, you most likely have a pullet... she'll start laying at 20-24 weeks (depends on breed)

post pics and see what others think!
