I have leghorns and new hampshire reds in my coop with a rid rooster and a few banty layers and roos. I really want to hatch some eggs the natural way with my girls. I understand the leghorns are not a really good chicken for this, but my nhr's will not go broody. Os there anything I can do?

There is no way to make a hen go broody. Its up to mother nature.

I've heard some say if a hen hears a baby chick she would go broody - but its just an old wives tale.

Not that I know of. It is quite a waiting game. Our hen finally went broody and hatched 5 beautiful babies

I got plenty of eggs in the fridge so I have about 10 out in the coop in the nesting boxes. I have no idea if it.will help, but figure I got nothing to lose

I don't know it that wive's tale is true or not, but 2 of my hens went broody the day after they heard me putting chicks in the brooder(a cage inside an old covered stock trailer). If you had a brooder near where your chickens are, they could hear them better.

Are your hens from a hatchery or breeder? It's less likely they will go broody if they're from a hatchery.

Yeah I got them from tractor supply last year in april. Once I noticed a while ago that one of the leghorns pulled an egg under her, but that was it lol. So the chick thing works?

The best way to get a broody hen is to buy some of a breed which is known to go broody (i.e. silkies, orpingtons, etc.). I don't think the chick thing works because I have a hen with chicks with my flock and no one else is even considering going broody.

Good luck.
