New to chickens! I grew up in rural south Louisiana where there were a lot of backyard chickens, cattle, farms, etc, but we never had our own birds. I now live on Long Island and am so excited that our 8 birds are already only a few weeks away from getting into their coop. We've got a mix of Ameraucana, Orpington, and Barred Rock.
One of my goals is to make the most of the property we have which is just an acre, some of which is wooded and steeply sloped. I love that I can still keep a small flock of dual purpose hens, grow vegetables, and so on even without a ton of space. I've wanted to "micro homestead" for a long time but I didn't have the space in our last property. I hope that chickens become the gateway to other close-to-nature and sustainable aspects of living. This goal is to prove to myself I don't need acreage to make the most of what I've got!
Our blended family of 9 (kids ranging from 2 to 26!) loves to hike and camp (and some of us fish and hunt). We believe in hard work but living slowly. I personally believe in the power of being connected to nature, which includes getting as close to our food sources as possible.
