Hello! This is my first post, but I've already had a lot of help from visiting this forum about this particular chicken. I have one about 4 mo old Slikie - and I can only assume she's a hen. My CURRENT problem is that she has a very dirty hind end, and what looks a bit like a prolapse for all I can tell? I will try to upload a pic somehow shortly. Tonight, I cleaned it up warm water, and gentle wiping, and put blue kote on it. There seemed a bit of blood, but more like irritation than a cut. Here's that back story that might help - I am new to chickens, she's part of my first flock. This chicken (Sasha) is the only silkie in a flock of bigger chickens and a few gunieas. She has always been very docile. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that her "cheeks" were looking very big, but chalked it up to her developing. Then one turned puss color, and I realized after doing research she had a double ear infection. She was quarientined in the garage for about 10 days while we cleaned and treated it. She was on antibiotics (Duramycin-10) for 7 days. Her poop got very loose, which I attributed to the antibiotics. I gave her a bath when she was done with the meds, and she looked better. Her vent may have been a bit enlarged then, but it was my first encounter with one, so I don't know! So over a fews days, I worked her back into the flock. She was getting picked on a bit, but I do not think to the point of injury. I went to check on her tonight, and her ears looked great, but now her vent is inside out looking. Mostly whiteish skin, and as I mentioned, just some red vessles (very faint and small). I had noticed her almost squatting and straining and making a low "ka ka ka ka" sound as I worked her back into the flock, and as it came on the heals of her being picked on, I thought it was a sumbissive or other sort of display. Tonight, I noticed she did it alone, and it was followed by poo. Not bad looking poo, really. While I held her to clean her, she did it again and it was wattery, but I had been irrigating the area. She has NOT laid eggs to this point - none of mine have. So is it really a prolapse if that's the case? Should I treat it as described elsewhere here? She is a VERY docile bird, and seems to be acting and eating/drinking normally otherwise - but normal is slow and gentle, so... FYI, there are 3 other hens, and 2 guniea cocks and one hen- all the same age, all housed together. Not free range yet, but nice size yard and house. Thanks so much for the help!

I am not sure what you are experiencing with your hen.

How is she acting otherwise, is she eating/drinking/foraging normally?

Her squatting could be her getting ready for egg laying..although, silkies are normally much older when they start to lay.

I know this sounds crazy but, can you get a picture of what you are talking about? I could be normal anatomical changes that occur when the go to the bathroom.

Wow. That really does look ouchy. I would try a little preparation H and see how that works. She looks as if she were straining to either lay or pass droppings. I know that they use preparation H for prolapses...

Can you feel under her vent..in her abdomen and see if you feel a mass that could be an egg or something else causing her to strain like that?
