We recently expanded our flock and acquired 2 Olive Eggers. One of them is growing and healthy. The other has been more quiet since we brought her home.
They were isolated together with heat at 90° at (approx 1 week old). Separated at time of prolapse (10 days old)
I’m a vet tech, but no longer working at a clinic, but I took her to the clinic I used to work at for treatment. A close friend/old coworker also has chickens and I knew between both of us we could assess and make a decision. We did re-insert, and she has not prolapsed since.
Since then she has had no visible solid stool, and the area surrounding her vent is just covered in diarrhea. No sign of blood, and I clean it off multiple times a day. She is on albon for coccidia tx as assumed culprit, and on day 3 of that. Have also done subQ fluids and water with electrolytes. SubQ fluids seem to perk her up. Appears to be drinking more than normal, appetite decreased.
I feel like at this point I should be seeing signs of improvement, but she appears to be status quo. Feathers are ruffled, wings will droop at times, sleeps more than average. Peeps constantly. Crop fills and appears to empty.
I’m beginning to feel like this isn’t coccidia. E Coli crossed my mind. We have decided if we don’t see signs of improvement by Monday, that we will elect euthanasia.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? I feel like I’ve read forum after forum without finding anything.

Thank you.

Hi @mlogan13 :frow Welcome To BYC
Where are you located in the world (state/country)?
Can you post some photos of the chick and her poop?
What are you feeding the chick?
Any bloat in the abdomen?
The chick is 10days old?

I would also be tempted to treat with Corid (Amprolium) in addition to the Albon. Sulfadimethoxine will treat certain strains of Coccidia found in chickens, but Amprolium will treat more.

You mention she is drinking more than normal - her crop is empty in the mornings before she eats/drinks?

See if she will eat a little wet chick starter, you can also give her bits of egg to entice her. Make sure she has chick grit (crushed granite as well).

Thank you! I’ll get my hands on some Corid today.
She is 11 days old today.
I am located in Iowa (USA)
Her crop feels empty in the morning, with no swollen abdomen.
I’m not getting any solid poop whatsoever. It just runs out of her. I clean her up several times a day.
She does appear more alert and active today.

She is getting mannapro medicated chick starter, along with some grit.
This morning she was pecking and scratching at her feed like normal.

I hope I posted these pictures right. I apologize for the somewhat poor quality. One picture is of her prolapse before reinserting.

Quite a large prolapse for such a little thing, it was fairly dark as well - did the tissue look like it was dying before you got it back in?

Tissue was covered with some poo, but when I cleaned it off it appeared healthy. It had to have happened within 15 minutes of me finding it as well, as I had just checked everyone and was tending to my rehab critters. I got a feeling that something was up and checked her and found it.

I’m going to feed myself, and then reassess her. I’ll get some additional photos and post them. Thank you all for your support!

She’s got poo on her backside again. I don’t feel much difference between her and others I got at the same time. It’s like she doesn’t have any control over it.

There’s no remarkable differences upon palpating her vs the other OE aside from a definite difference in weight.
She won’t lay down either, and is constantly peeping, like she’s shuddering non stop. Wings are slightly drooped.
There’s no sign of solid poop, and she doesn’t feel constipated. I moistened some chick starter, and cooked scrambled eggs. So far no interest.

I’m questioning yolk sac infection, and maybe I’ve completely misdiagnosed from the get go. The discharge is below the vent, and the skin tone around the discharge is bluish. I’m going to do a warm soak in iodine shampoo and see if I can feel a scab or find an unhealed navel.

Go idea to look for an unhealed navel. Could be Omphalitis.
