Hi! I have a just about 1 year old Silver Laced Wyandotte who has a prolapse and was egg bound. We fixed the egg bound problem but her prolapse is caked with poop and dried on the outside. I discovered this 2 days ago and immediately brought her inside, soaked in Epsom salt, lubricated her vent and viola! and egg! Now I can't get her parts back in! I soaked her again, applied cortisone and preparation H to the area, increased calcium, giving her electrolytes in her water and have her isolated in a crate in my bathroom covered as to keep the light out. Her prolapsed parts are crusty and she is getting irritated with me trying to clean them. Do I leave it and let this area slough off? Whats the next step for RoseWillow? I consulted a friend whose works for a vet that has and sees chickens but I am doing all they suggested.......I have to add she is a BIG bully but if I have to bring her to a higher level medical professional I can....just wondering what they might suggest to do? Also, her bottom was getting bare from pecking, it looks worse after being sprayed with Veterycin......

Henr vent should be kept moist at all tiems. Honey, coconut oil, mineral oil, vaseline or similar oil should be applied and it should be kept as clean as possible. Soaking in warm soapy water or Epsom salts daily might help to soften the crust where you can rub off any dead skin.

Coconut oil! good tip! Thank you

How is she doing? Is any of the dark or necrotic tissue coming off with the soaks?
It's like 2 steps forward and three steps back.....despite covering her to block out the light she tried to lay an egg and it got stuck outside in the sack of her insides. I soaked her, debrided the dried areas and delivered the egg. I was able to reduce it back inside but every time she poops it pops right out. We have been spraying with veterycin and keeping as moist as we can. It's a real battle right now. I soaked her tonight, got it back in, I made her some scrambled eggs and went to take the bowl and there it was hanging out again. I feel so defeated......

Do you have any current clear pictures of her prolapse? To stop laying temporarily, which can take 3-4 days to stop, you can keep her in the dark for 16 hours daily, letting her out for 8 hours a day to eat drink, be cared for, and walk around. Some prolapses can take days to weeks to stay in, especially if there is any damage to the vent from pecking or stuck eggs. A vet can insert a stitch into the vent sometimes to hold the prolapse inside. In some cases the owner may feel the need to cull the hen when the prolapse is just not responding to treatment. Hopefully, just keeping her clean, keeping the prolapse moist with oil or honey, and pushing it back in, will eventually work.

This is how it looks after treating it just now....

Have you tried to push it back in? I think more of the beige material will come off with each daily soak. Hard to know if she will have more vent damage when she heals.
