Last week I noticed one of my NHR hens seemed to have a problem with her vent. I had actually noticed diarrhea on her behind a couple of days before that but she seemed fine. Then I noticed the problem and from having read here for years realized what the problem was and it was so nice I could come here and search and find advice for my girl.

I took her out of the regular place we keep chickens and put her in the time out place. There's a box for at night and she was allowed to roam around in the yard around it and see the other chickens but they could not get to her because there is a fence that separates them. From reading here I got that the worst problem is other chickens may peck because of the redness and that could cause a worse problem.

Anyway I washed her up with rubber gloves on and then gently pushed her vent back into place . I also wiped some local honey I have on the area. I read in a post here that honey is what someone else used and it seemed like the best thing to use on her.

After that I washed her by soaking her a little in my chicken tub once a day. Since it's hot out here I didn't worry about her being cold. Otherwise I would have kept her in a warm place after getting her wet. After a couple of days she seemed better. It did take about 5 days for her vent to look normal again.

Now it's been a week and she is completely healed and acting like herself with zero mess on her behind. She gets to go back on the roost tonight with her friends.

Thanks again to everyone that posts here about what to do or what they've done to help their chickens. I feel very confident about what I can and cannot do for the problems that arise.
