My week old silkie has been getting pasty butt. We've cleaned her 2-3 times this week. Last night she pooped fine. This am she looked to be pasted again but then I noticed that what I thought was a lump of poop was actually soft and pulsing. I suspect she has a prolapsed vent? She is a silkie so I'm not sure how far inside her vent she would still be black (as opposed to the pink you would expect to see with prolapse in other breeds?) Maybe not at all and it is something else entirely? She is also lethargic and limping. Photo below. Please help me save my baby!! All opinions and suggestions are welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't have advice for you, but I am having the same problem. We have 5 silkie chicks, and 2 of them have this same problem. I have been looking everywhere for advise, or answers, but the only thing I find is info about "Pasty Butt", which, as I understand it, is poop blocking or covering the vent...and this is NOT poop. It's a black, pulsating protrusion from the vent. My other chicks, luckily, don't seem to be picking at them, but they do seem to be constipated. I have been giving them probiotics with their food. We ordered them through the mail, and they just arrived yesterday. I noticed this problem within the first 12hrs of having them. They seem to struggle, and cry when they have to try and pass. I have done all of the suggestions I could find, varieties of soaking & wiping, and different lubes, and they don't seem to be getting any better (maybe I'm impatient, but we already lost 4 of our 18 that arrived - of different issues - but, I am not eager to lose anymore, especially if I can help it!). So far, in all the books I have, and all the online research I've been doing, this post is the only one I've found that is about the actual vent prolapse, and not just Pasty Poo on the bum. It's been incredibly frustrating, and I was surprised that there isn't more info exactly about this problem. I am down to my last straw: going to soak them once more & try some Prep H. Hopefully it will be better in the morning, and if it is, I'll let you know. I'm open to anyone's advice too, so anyone who knows what this is, or how to fix it, Please! Drop a Line!

Oh! but one last question: Can this be caused by the hatchery attempting to sex the chicks, before sending? I ordered straight run, and the thought has crossed my mind that they through in the rejects of their pullet guarantee, after squishing their insides.

Follow up:

I have good and bad news. 2 of the silkies with the bulging vents, corrected themselves overnight. The one I was most worried about, lost complete ability to have a BM. Her vent was clear of poo, but it was still enlarged, protruding, and pulsating. I had planned to use Preparation H on her vent, but turned out the product I purchased had "pain relief" in it (Praxomine - which can be deadly to chicks), so I couldn't use it. I cleaned her up, mixed together some coconut oil & anti-bac ointment, and applied it. I tried to give the protrusion a push back in, but it didn't do anything. The next morning, she was incredibly lethargic, her vent was even worst, and it appeared chapped/dry. She was unresponsive to the other chicks stepping on her, and a few had even pooped on her. I have a hard time deciding somethings fate, and was hoping she would magically improve, but after some time passed and she was still not responding, we decided it was best to end her suffering. It was heart breaking, but I think I made the right choice. I hope you had better luck with your situation.

Maybe very late on this... but did you ever find any more information or causes? 6 week old silkie of mine with exactly what you described and I tried everything everything. And this thread and your description is the ONLY thing I could find after tons of online research and chatting in forums. Very frustrating.. no idea what I was dealing with.
