Hi everyone
It's the first time this has happened to us...one of our most lovely hens was not herself on Saturday and on inspection, I found she had a compressed crushed egg shell coming out of her vent which was prolapsed and very swollen, bubbling when she strained. I was able to gently remove the egg shell without damaging her further.
I have read the posts on this forum re how to treat this and followed all the advice I could find. Warm epsom salts baths daily which also helps to clean the area (there has been lots of poo), then using coconut oil to keep it moist along with Hydrocortisone ointment to reduce swelling.
I ordered some Calcium citrate tablets straight away and they should have been delivered the next day but due to bank holiday weekend didn't arrive until yesterday - a delay of several days
.
At one point the swelling was reduced and the area clean enough for me to have a go at pushing the prolapse gently back in. It all went in nicely but then she strained again and it all came out. I don't know if she has other eggs backed up. Hoefully the Calcium citrate will help with this. I found it fruitless to keep trying and causing her distress. She is reasonably perky and moving about her temporary crate, bedding down near the food and water which she has taken small amounts of. I have given her a few droppers daily of water mixed with Net-Tex Vit Boost Tonic.
Now I'm not sure what to do.
A layer of crusty dry white poo is now all over the prolapse area and near on impossible to remove in the bath even with lots of soaking. I don't know whether to try and push the prolapse back in again like this.
I continue to put the coconut oil and steroid cream on. Will it just heal now by itself? She is the calmest most sweet and lovely hen but trying to do too much with the prolapse area seems to cause her distress and pain.
I will attach a photo taken today, there is wet white poo covering the prolapse but it is dry and caked underneath. I have trimmed her feathers below to aim keeping the area clean.
Even if I do push it back in again, how will it stay if she strains again? I tried to use a bandage as someone suggested but I haven't been able to do it successfully.
