I have a 5 day old chick with what I think is a prolapsed vent. She is very active and eating and drinking but she strains to poop, is walking stiffly, won't lie down, and keeps messing with her vent area. She was very lively and active when she first arrived but then started getting pasty butt yesterday that I was treating. It looks like her vent is prolapsed but I've never had a chick with a prolapsed vent so I'm not 100% certain. Is that what I'm looking at? Advice on what to do?
I've read a couple different threads and have already applied some Prep H cream. I've tried pushing the prolapse back in but she really fights it and every time I do she pushes it back out and poops. Do I need to hold it in longer? I don't want to hurt her or cause further issue.
This was my first time ordering chicks from a hatchery and two of the seven have already died when I have never lost a chick in previous years (one was DOA and the other was lethargic and wasn't able to recover) 😢 I don't want to lose another, it's been a hard enough time 💔

If I need better pictures let me know, I may be able to have someone help me take some. It was too difficult for me to try and take photos while holding her by myself, she's a lively little one and very against being restrained

I would not try to push the prolapse back, since it should go back in on it’s own once the chick is pooping okay. I would offer some chilled coconut oil 1 tsp cut into small pieces to peck. Mineral oil or olive oil added ro a little moisted chick feed or egg is a good substitute. Pasty butt is usually from dehydration or shipping stress, and constipation. Make sure it is taking a lot of water, and offering wet chick feed can get more water into her.

Does the coconut oil need to be chilled or just in a solid state? Or does it matter either way? She is drinking good but I can put some water in their feed as well to make sure all of them are getting enough. One of the others had pasty butt as well but it cleared up after two washes, the other three have not had any issues with it.
Thank you for the advice!! I was not finding many articles about chicks with prolapse and it seemed everyone was giving different answers. The Prep H I applied seemed to at least help a little as she has started to sit/lie down again. Would you reccomend I continue applying that as well every so often? Maybe once or twice a day? Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I am doing the best for her as is possible. Thank you again!
