I brought home my first chicks yesterday, one buff orpington and one barred rock chick. While both chicks have the teeny-tiny beginnings of a comb, I noticed the barred rock chick has a more prominent one. Is this common to the breed or an extremely early sign I got a rooster?

from PA!

I had a BR chick that developed a big comb and the others didn't. I was sure it was a roo! Long story short, she's a she. They just develop differently, even within their own breed. Good luck - time will tell!

BR pullets sometimes have larger combs than you would expect and BRs usually have larger combs than Orpingtons anyway. Is the coloring lighter, more grayish/silvery rather than dark black? Both sexes have head spots, but males' are larger, more irregular with "frosting" across the back of the head. If you show a pic, BR folks can tell you what you have with a high degree of certainty.

YES...POST pictures please cuz I have a BO and BR hatching next week (on hold at Bomgaars) and I need to know! I have BOs but the BR will be my first. thanks
