Proper use of grammar

Spelling and grammar errors used to annoy me, now I find them humorous. You'd think computers didn't have spell checkers. The absolute worst is Craigslist, but then again it can be quite funny.

I didn't know the law allowed people to let their kids drop out of school in the fifth grade. In any event, you are a shining example of the idea that you don't have to go to college to learn basic language skills. I can see by your post that you clearly understand the importance of grammar, spelling, anf punctuation.

No I didnt drop out of school.. ActuallyI did go into homeschooling but as both of my parents worked full time I mainly taught myself.. At 16 I received my GED and at 17 spent 1 year in college.. I hardly practiced any english during homeschooling and was able to test into the advanced english class at University of Indianapolis.. I actually took Phsycology instead of English just because it was much more fun..

It's just everyone has their different pet peeves, some are about how people pronounce things, some are about how people look/act, and then some is "all of the above". I have a little bit of all of them to some extent, but im sure that's everyone.

Sloppyness and too quick on the keyboards are my flaws. To me, I dont care what others use and if I can not spell at least I would use the (sp) as incorrect spelling. Besides I do not have a spell checker on my end.

So lighten up folks unless they are talking backwards!

The problem with the attitude that grammar doesn't matter is that very often the message gets lost. I have read posts with long sentences, no punctuation, strange spelling, etc., and had NO IDEA what the person was trying to say. In a medium like an internet forum where all you have is your written word to convey your ideas, you put yourself at a disadvantage if you don't follow the basic rules of grammar. All of this is taught in elementary school, so lack of higher education is not an excuse. It's just sloppy thinking or laziness, in my humble opinion. I guess you could say it's a pet peeve of mine as well. Language IS important.

edited for spelling again!!!

What annoys me is that posts like this one are even allowed on ANY forum. You can rest assured that thousands of members of this forum hesitate to post ANYTHING because of fear of appearing ignorant to some members, especially when the poster spells English, english.

I can understand how that would effect you.. I just worry that someone with less then "proper" grammar would be intimidated by topics such as this one.. I feel that if you can't understand someone a simple " Could you explain that to me" would be kinder... I just think that we as a people are becoming less tolerant of others.. With as many children on this forum, I feel as long as you can decipher what the other person is saying that should be good enough..
Even now I as I type I am second guessing myself and rewriting whole sentences for fear that I will use a word improperly.. Maybe it's just me but I dont want people afraid to reply to a question for fear they will be ostracized...

ETA Correct my mistakes

I agree with Hikerchick. Most of the time I let the misspellings go in one eye and out the other - spelling is not everyone's forte. But, when people don't use periods at the end of a thought, and sentences run on for three paragraphs, it is very difficult to figure out what they're trying to say.

I had the same complaint about Faulkner in high school.
