pros/cons, tips, for using a dog crate as a brooder

Now that the chicks are a bit older (and bigger) we moved them into a dog crate- this way they can't fly out, and they have more room.

I put screening around the bottom to help with the amount of shavings being kicked out of the crate, and that seems to be working.

Is there anything else I can do to make it more comfy for the chicks?

They do seem to enjoy having the extra room. But they seem to be able to dig down to the bottom and make bare spots on the floor- they didn't do this in the big rubbermaid bin they were in before.

I just want them to be happy and safe.
