So we have a barn, built by the previous owner of our new home. It's actually really well built, except for the electric wiring the owner damaged upon his exit. (it just so happens that we found his name tag for his AF blues in the garage, so we're guessing he was an airman that did not appreciate being foreclosed on) now, the property was empty for a little over 3 years, then was "flipped" and we purchased. The barn is a perfect place for our chickens, coming in a couple days. We built the coop, which is in one of the three giant stalls in the barn. And in the next six weeks we're building a giant outdoor run, which will be attached to the entire left side of the barn.

Here's the problem. The property was not fenced, so being empty for all that time means the animals were able to take over the yard and barn. We've fenced almost an acre behind us, as a backyard, and my two Bostons have taken care of the underground squirrels and the rabbits. The fence is a three rail with goat wire all the way around. The barn is inside the fence, but the animals have dug out so many holes into the barn that there's a breeze coming in...big holes. So my solution to this is to dig down, all the way around the barn, then attach goat wire. My question....took a long time to get here, I know...how far down should I dig? I was thinking two or three feet down, but I'm not sure how far down an animal digs. I'm pretty sure our biggest problem is going to be the rabbits. They are all over and I think there may be a family of cotton tails under the shed, which is attached to the far right of the barn. Like I said, my Bostons are great little hunters, and Waffle is an animal catching menace (almost made me cry when he nabbed a squirrel at the in-laws) but I want the barn completely protected. So any ideas?

A little side note- our home is in a "community" of 2.5 acre lots. Most of the homes are horse
properties, wide open. Mine is going to have three sections. Our backyard, one rectangle directly behind the chicken house which will have fruit trees, and a third section that is at the very back and has no plan as of yet.

OK, a long questions gets a long answer!!

Ground squirrel and rabbits don't pose a threat to chickens.
Just chase toys for the Bostons!
A new sheriff is in town, rabbits, squirrels will relocate!!

Goat wire around the property will keep goats out or in.
Raccoons, possum or other predators will just jump/climb over it or find a nearby tree and drop over it..
A coyote can jump a 4' fence easily.
Even some dogs can jump it too.

As for the holes around the building.
If animals, horses, chickens rabbits, anything that eats grain, live there, it will attract rats.
You know you have rats if you see holes eaten into the wood to get in or out.
Birds/rabbits will attract coyote, raccoons, fox, etc they will dig to get in.

What I would do, and have done, is dig around the perimeter of the building, about a foot down or more, lay a 2' wide hardware wire (it comes in 4' wide rolls), 1"x1" holes or smaller.
Dig down in an "L" shape and bend the wire in an "L" to accommodate the hole.
Dig down 1' and out 1'

You can bend the wire using a 2x4, stand on the 2x4 and bend up.
Nail or screw to the sill, then bury it with gravel.

You can also use chicken wire, just use multiple layers.

Your Bostons are also a 'danger' to the chickens too!!

Yep, I think Fishbone has the right answer. While your digging may as well do the same thing for the chicken run if you have the time and resources. Congrats on your new property! I wish I had a couple acres. May want to double check if there is an HOA - many of those kind of places will let you have cows and horses, but no chickens.

Thank you! We did the goat wire on the fence to keep our dogs in, and the neighbors roaming cattle dog out. The chicken run is going to have a roof on it, so it'll be pretty well protected. If something does happen to climb the fence, Waffle would be on it in a second. Yesterday something popped it's head out of a hole, he took off for it and then smashed his flat little face into the hole for the next thirty minutes. We actually had a ground squirrel move her babies from our backdoor to right outside the back fence. We got to watch from the sliding glass door, it was one of the cutest little things I've seen out her.

I was wondering about the local wild animals. Since there are almost no trees out here, would we even have raccoons? We know for sure there is a skunk, since Waffle tried to get it through the fence one night, and then the entire backyard STUNK.
ok, I'm sure there was more I wanted to say, but the chicks just got here and I'm distracted.
Back later. Thanks again.

Yep, we have a POA (property owners association). Ours is really un-obtrusive, they're mostly to keep up maintenance of the area, and keeping an eye on water usage. We're still zoned through the county, and the covenant doesn't interfere with their rules. So we are allowed all kinds of livestock. We have a neighbor that has almost any kind of bird you could think of. We've heard roosters, ducks, geese and turkeys. I really want to go over and chat and see his set up, but we're new and I don't want to bug him just yet. I'll get up the nerve soon.
Thanks! :D
