protein ideas

I wonder if it could be something other than protein deficiency. Lack of light this time of year? A molt? I just give my birds BOSS, a little yogurt, mealworms... I did give them a little tuna one day, which they loved. Don't think I would feed them fish without cooking it first.

I've also read about contraptions for sort of breeding maggots in the chicken run. Those are great protein. Gross, but great protein.

it's not really the light since this has been going on for a couple of months....pretty sure it's not light, no molting going on right now. i think it was the food issue.

I feed mine various treats each morning. I use Calf Manna in with my regular layer pellets as a staple diet. Some of the treats include a can of inexpensive tuna mixed with oatmeal, grains or ramen noodles (which they think are worms and go crazy over). I also feed yogurt mixed with Manna Pro Gamebird/showbird crumbles (22-24% protein) and cracked bulgur wheat that I get at my local flea market inexpensively.

Since I have silkies and I want lush thick feather coats, more protein is an essential in my feeding program.

In southern places like Florida, they don't necessarily need to slow down too much. I don't think it's so much that they need a break as it is that they often don't have everything they need during the winter months to produce regularly. In the south, we have a better chance of providing them everything they need.
