So here is my first shot at making leg bands. I couldn't find any I liked enough to buy, plus I wanted my own custom numbering system. It was becoming too difficult to tell all the pullets apart, and I really need to know who is who. These are just the prototypes and I will improve on the design. They are adjustable as the chicken grows. Also, I am test running on my pullets for a few weeks, to make sure they don't rub or fall off or anything like that. The numbering system I made up goes like this; G1 for the first generation chickens I got, then 01, 02, 03 for the individual. G2 for the second generation and 01, 02 for the individual. So I have G1 01 thru G1 11, and G2 01. That way I can tell when I got them, the age, and I can tell the individuals themselves apart. For some reason the numbers are hard to see in the pics, but are actually really obvious.

Any suggestions or ideas for the next ones welcome!

Here they are;

First I cut the aluminum.

Then I sanded the heck outta them.

Then I punched the numbers.

Then I did a rough rounding of the aluminum.

Then I fine tuned the rounding.

Then I put them on the chickens! Final product-

Good job! you certainly did a fine job with those leg bands. Now you have created a home-based product that people will be "flocking" to buy from you. Seriously, you could sell those bands faster than you could make them. I admire your creativity!

First thing I'd do different, I wouldn't use the colored aluminum again... it scratches too easily when I am making them.

How do you get them on the chicken's leg? Unwrap and wrap it around?

They are wonderful. I'd like to mark my chickens that have raised broods so I'll know who the good Moms are next season. They are all the same breed and hard to tell apart.
