If you don't mind (or even if you do) I'm gonna brag for a bit about my Buff Orpington. As a hobby dog trainer and lover of all animals I thought "why not?" and I socialized this gal from 2 days old to be a companion animal. I did some little things with her when she was younger but the past couple months we've really stepped up our game. Using only positive training and our special bond along with clicker training, Jagger's tricks include...
1. Step up on something
2. Step down from something
3. Jump
4. Jump through hoop
5. Fluff up when called "pretty bird"
6. Come
7. Spin around
8. Back up
9. Peck whichever of my legs/arms/hands I tell her to
10. Pick the joker out from a deck of cards in any order
11. Ring a bell
Jags will also walk on a leash although she really doesn't need it and she rides in my bike basket. She just lays there on her towel and she'll take breaks to sit on my shoulder, arm, or hand. I'll take her out and let her eat grass or clovers. Even if I have to do something she doesn't appreciate like bathing her as her back feathers tend to get poopy or cleaning a cut she had once, she still trusts me all the way and won't resent me because of anything I do to her. She's so friendly and sweet and a quiet, calming companion to have on bike rides especially. She isn't afraid of anyone and rarely ever gets stressed on an outing. She likes adventures and I wouldn't make her do anything that she doesn't want to do.
Even if I go out in the run past midnight, it can be pitch black, cold, and storming, she'll wake up inside the coop and run right out to greet me. She isn't afraid when I'm with her even if she can't see me. She wipes her beak on me when she gets impatient and wants to train, she knows the routine. She's smart, though I might have laughed a little when she was going in the coop for the night after greeting me in the run one night...it was so dark she couldn't see the coop door and hit right into it, shook herself, and went on with her life. She's eager to please and always wants to learn, she isn't really afraid of loud noises and things she might encounter on a walk or bike ride like horses, cars, ATV's, or dogs. Her and I like to hang out with the horses down the road!
I'm very proud because Jagger might be the only "trick chicken" out there and she's not even 9 months old yet. As her trainer and owner I just turned 15. She can pull off her unique lifestyle (she has a very exciting, social life for a chicken!) because of the way I train, her individual personality, how often we train, her early socialization, our incredible bond,, and of course her breed is known to be friendly and calm. She's like a trick animal, companion animal, emotional support animal, and best buddy rolled into one. I sure do love this bird!
