My Coop
My Coop
This is the story. This last fall I had 9 aricauna hens and one barred rock rooster. I live in the woods of Northern Minnesota. About Last November some raccoons attacked my coop in force and slaughtered every chicken but one in one night. An old board was broken from the inside out during the attack and a hen escaped. I found a hole where the coons dug under the outside run and opened my pulley controlled door to enter the coop. A trail of feathers and blood led out the back. Now.... the survivor hen must have seen her 8 sisters and rooster slaughtered right in front of her and broke out the board and escaped Into the woods... I still see her every now and then in the yard. But it is so cold out..... has been under 50 below zero with wind chill out at night.... how the heck does she survive? I set up live cage traps. She won’t go in. I tried to net her. She flies back over a hundred feet through the snowy woods and disappears only to show up again. I put food out for her but the deer steal it. She gets some though and keeps coming back. She hangs out with the ruffed grouse sometimes. She is turning wild and I wonder if and how will she survive alone in my forest. It’s so murderously cold out. Is it possible she can survive out in this mess? Unreal.... Auricana hens are that badass? Please give feedback

If she's following and foraging with the wild ground birds she may be okay, chickens are more hardy than people give them credit for. She may eventually get caught by a predator though, but if she's that feisty you never know. I would keep putting out feed for her just in case she can get some.

I am kind of worried I have to say. I wonder if she has energy to make
Snow into water to live. Was thinking about just cutting the loss
And shooting her if it would put her out of her misery. Thanks. Hopefully it gets a little warmer soon and hopefully she has a shelter. Thanks!

Most animals survive all winter eating snow for water. One member on here says that's all he gives his chickens for the winter. I personally would leave it be and see how it goes. She may calm down and return one day, but do what you think is best, only you can say if she appears to be suffering.

There was a story this past autumn of a woman who claimed that there was a flock of abandoned/wild chickens living outside her place of business, an industrial park.
SHE made up her mind to catch them and give them a home.
SHE built them an outstading coop.
SHE went to harrowing lengths to catch them one by one and brought them home.

There are dozens of accounts of wild/feral chickens on this site.

Why would you shoot her?
Did you ever fix your coop? Are you even ready for her if she does come back?

Why don't you start a new post and title it:

HOW CAN I CATCH A WILD HEN?

I'll bet lots of people would be willing to help you.

I am very sorry for the losses you suffered in that raccoon attack, because it wasn't just the lone lost hen that suffered a loss that night.
I love my animals and care deeply about others' animals as well.
I suffered an experience a few years ago, an unimaginable loss. I know without a doctors signature or a code on an insurance paper that I suffer from PTSD. I think since you used the term you may feel the same way.
Maybe it would do you good to try some more to catch her, provide for her, or keep her safe.
There are so many people here that care. That can guide you. You could build her a shelter.
You could make a treadle feeder.
I don't know because I'm not an expert, but there are plenty here, and those of us that aren't... we'll be the ones cheering you on or praying for you.
Personally, I think it's worth a try.
I hope you aren't offended by a peptalk.

The chicken coop was fixed the same day and has and does remain open.... she never goes to it....I don’t blame her after what happened. The food is still in there too. I have been trying for months to catch that darn chicken. She lives up in the forest spruce and balsam fir trees. Thanks

Maybe you could put a crate with bedding and food maybe she will go in and she would feel safe I don’t blame her for not wanting to back to her house that’s where bad scary things happened she need to have some place safe maybe that’s why she in the trees it’s just a thought

Great job!
Keep trying.
Don't give up.
In the spring you should get more chickens. She'll be drawn by their sounds. She must be lonely even with the grouse.
I'm choosing to have faith in her and you @HR CLUCKnSTUFF.
:hugs

I think a crate is an excellent idea.
