Hello BYC Community! I own a 15 weeks old pullet that tends to eat grit like its a treat or something. She is healthy, happy, eating and drinking but this behavior worries me not gonna lie.

I don't let her eat the whole bowl of grit because am afraid something will happen to her. She loves it so much and something tells me that if she overdo it, she could probably die because of it; plus, I don't let her eat grit every day for the same reason.

What do you guys suggest? Is it safe for her to eat that much? Will overeating grit cause impacted crop and other health issues?

Waiting for your reply. Thank you!

PS: Her main food is grower feed.

If you are not letting her have grit all the time she may be trying to make sure she gets enough when she can get to it. Her crop issues would more likely come from not enough grit.

Some birds will fill up on grit. It can lead to crop issues.

Maybe for now remove the dish but sprinkle a small handful in the run. That would help prevent gorging on it. It's still there just not in one spot....gotta look for it. It's unlikely she would find enough to fill the crop that way.

Should I let her fill the crop with grit everyday? Isn't it dangerous?

if she seems like she’s eating more grit than normal dont free feed grit and just sprinkle it on top of their food every so often
