My buff orphington layed her first eggs this past week. She hatched March 13 and layed her first egg at 16 weeks. The only problem is she's laying in one of garbage bins we use for storage. We found a total of 5 eggs in the garbage bin. Little did we know she started laying last week. The bigger egg is from our RIR. Does anyone have an idea when the eggs start to get normal in size?

Congratulations on the first eggs!

Do you have adult hens that use the nesting boxes? If you do, she may not feel confident enough to use the nesting boxes just yet. I've found that with some of my new layers they lay in odd places, but eventually move the nesting boxes. I also place fake eggs in the boxes to draw attention.

As for when her eggs will get to a normal size...well, that's up to her:) Give her time. Something fun to do is weigh her egg each time she lays - to the eye an egg may look like it's not getting much bigger, but the weight will tell the tale.

Deny her access to bin by covering up.
If you're free ranging might be good to confine her to coop and run until she 'gets' it'.
Can take days, weeks, or months for pullet eggs to get up to a 'large' size(or what ever size will be her 'normal').

Thank you! So proud of her. I will give the fake egg a try. I will also try weighing the eggs.

I covered up the bin yesterday and guess what?! She knocked it down and layed again in there. I guess i need to try and confine her. Thanks!
