Today when I brought the birdies their morning treats, I reached down to pet a couple of the Ameraucanas. Two were happy to get petted, and just sat there and hummed to themselves as usual. Another was kind of hanging out around my feet like she wanted to be petted too, but when I reached towards her she stomped over to one of the roos. Then she squatted down and fluffed her tailfeathers, pushed her chest in the shavings and waggled her tail in the air, like she wanted a boyfriend.
All the chickens are barely two months old, so the roo looked absolutely befuddled, like, "Uh...I don't think I'm ready for that much committment yet..." But I thought they wouldn't even take an interest for about three or four more months! She is pretty big compared to the other chickens, but I know for a fact how old she is, I got her as a tiny chick. She only stopped when one of the other females stomped her.
This just seems odd. Anyone else have precocious chickens? I'm just feeding them regular chick starter, chopped hardboiled eggs, clover from the yard (no pesticides or anything like that), stale wholewheat bread, lettuce. I guess I really need to get cracking on building those nest boxes...
