An olive egger pullet I hatched in Nov was looking "off" the other day. She was outside free ranging with the hens and I was watching her... her wings were held a little low, she was squinting a bit. She would scratch and peck, but then puff up and just like try and sleep while standing. I easily caught her (another sign something is wrong) and put her in "sick bay".
Gave her food, vitamin water. Next day just left her alone. (that was yesterday ). Today (day 2) her neck is totally twisted so she is looking up. She is falling to the side. Haven't seen her eat.

Should I have my husband put her out of her misery, or is there something I can do? I had another pullet (her hatch mate) die unexpectedly last week as well. She was puffed up and standing around one afternoon, so I put her in sick bay, where she was eating and clucking. Next morning she was dead. I am thinking Mareks. I am leaning toward putting this Olive egger down.

Thoughts?

I also think that Mareks could be a possibility. Do you see any difference in the eye color or pupil shape? There are 4 types, so symptoms can vary. Wry neck is just a symptom, and it can be seen with head or neck injuries, vitamin E or B1 thiamine deficiency, and Mareks disease. You can try giving those vitamins for a week or two to see if there is improvement. If you cull or lose her, I would try to get a necropsy by your provincial poultry vet, just to look for Mareks. Here is someone you may contact:
