Pullet-shut chicken door

I know this is so simple that I just can't "get it". I have the pullet-shut chicken door. I have watched the video and read the instructions. My door is set to open at 8:30am and close at 6:30 pm. In order to cancel these settings, we always unplug and remove the wires to clear the settings. I know I should be able to go outside and hold the magnet on to clear the settings but I always goof it up and end up doing our usual routine. The door is closed in the morning - how do I use the magnet to reset this from the closed position? Do I hold it on while it opens then closes then opens again? I know in the evening I need to hold the magnet on until it closes. Thanks for your help

I know this is an old post but I agree it's confusing. It's a great door but the instructions are confusing. The magnet reset is for disabling the photo sensor and setting the night timer, so it can only be done at night when the door needs to close.
