I have a 7 week old barred rock roo with something funny going on with his toes - they look blistered- the scale will be completely gone, and it will bleed.

I do have a picking problem going on, but that seems confined to tail feathers of two other pullets, with the dominant pullet being the picker. I have spent a lot of time observing both in the run and in the coop and have never seen any pecking at this roo's toes, and have seen lots of pecking at the tail feathers of others.

I have a couple of chickens that came last fall from a farmer to keep a sole survivor company, these came with scaly leg mite, which I have treated and continue to treat as these mutts have feathered legs and I really can't tell if the scaly leg mites are gone or not - this has been going on for months. I've been told that I have to wait for the molt to see if the ugly old scales ontheir legs fall off and if it is clear underneath.

I have treated this little roo with veterx, and have been dipping all the pullets legs into veg oil once a week just in case there is scaly leg mites on these pullets - they share a coop with the big chickens. No other pullet has any symptoms.

I have been using blue kote on the roo's feet because of the presence of a little bit of blood - so it is hard to really see what is going on. Where there are a few scales missing, the surface is pitted and not at all smooth.

Any ideas? the problem is all on the toes, the legs are fine.

You should search here concerning bumbleoot.

You may need to givwe this roo a break from the coop, especially if he has something infectious.

May I ask what products you use in your bedding and what bedding is in the coop?

Are you using deep litter or other method?

How high are roosts/platforms?

the pads of his feet are fine, this problem is only with the top of his toes.

he was started on pine shavings, is now on hay in the coop, and grass in the run.

nothing is weeping or wet - just scabby where the scale is off. I don't know if the pullet that is pecking others tails could peck off a scale...the scales are raising a bit which makes me think of scaly leg mites, but no one else has them and treating with vetrx and oil is not changing anything.

I stumped. really don't think it is bumblefoot.

this last week I've introduced roosts for these 6 and 8 week olds, they are 18 inches and 28 inches off the ground, with lots of hay bedding below. And all the problems are on the tops of his toes.
