Pullet with swollen face, can't/won't open her eyes

I have a welsummer pullet who's face is swelling up. She's about 6 months old, recently started laying. I noticed she was acting funny two nights ago, and by then her face had some mild swelling. It's significantly worse on the right side of her face; she'll open her other eye. Her balance seems a little off too, but I suspect that's because she doesn't want to open her eyeballs.

The same night i noticed her acting weird, another pullet died. Different symptoms, I don't see any relation between the two. That one was sick for 3 days. The day i noticed HER acting sick, we had just got an andalusian pullet, but as far as I know she is in perfect health.

Please tell me she's just got an infection, not some nasty disease.



The back of her comb got bit off about a week ago. Probably wishful thinking, but could that have something to do with it? :/

Did you quarantine the Andalusian pulley or just put her in with your other birds?

Quarantining new flock members for several weeks is usually the safest way to do it so as not to trigger an illness in your existing flock.

Are there any other symptoms, like runny nose, foamy eyes?

I have had hens that have had swollen eyes before, like a sinus infection. I was able to treat them with Vetrx, topically. It is a great product to have on hand and can be found at TSC. If you have no other ideas, it probably can't hurt. When I treated my hens, I dabbed in on their combs, nostrils and wattles. Try to not get any in her eyes. It can be given orally too, there are instructions with the package. Keep us posted!

Yep, she is currently in quarantine. I've had to cull over half my flock before because of some seriously sloppy quarantining... Not making that mistake again. I might have tracked droppings from her original coop into my coop, but from what I saw her birds were all in reasonable shape.

Thanks for your help! I'll see about getting some of that tomorrow - maybe not til Saturday though, I'm super busy tomorrow.

I think she might have a little fever. She really wants to sit down but then she gets too hot, so she stands back up. :/ Her feet are really warm.
She's having a hard time breathing too. Her beak is always cracked open just slightly.
She's drunk some water. I'll try and find some probiotics to put in it, see what that does.

I will tell you this. Do NOT try to cool her off by wetting her. I killed a sick hen doing thst, thinking I was helping her on a 110+ degree day.

Thanks. I had considered wiping a little water on her feet when she was really hot, but now I definitely won't.

About 5 minutes after I logged off last night, she improved dramatically. She was preening a little, opening her left eye, scratching her face, and she stopped mouth breathing.

Keep her warm 80F in a quiet place. Administering water orally with a syringe or eye dropper would also be good.

She's drank some water from a little bowl when we put it up to her face. Last I saw her she was improving (I've been out of the house all day).
I have. Biggest issue has been EYP/Internal laying, almost near the point were I wondered if they were getting into something gross. Been a long time since I lost one to that though. Three or four cases of worms, a nasty respiratory outbreak last year that required culling, but I've never seen symptoms like this before.

She's not feverish anymore. Randomly decided she was done acting sicker than she was and perked up a bit. I don't think she's in danger of dying, so yay!

Is there any way she could've gotten sick from drinking out of the duck pool? Wr have three right now, and the chicken's outside waterer is an old sled, so the ducks like to hang out in that. Could that be a possibility?
