HI well one of our 6 RIR pullets started to lay. She has laid 2 eggs. not in any of the 9 nesting boxes of course. Right on the floor when you open the door. lol But the shell is so thin it looks like a water ballon. Is this normal? We feed lots of calc. Our other eggs are fine from the hen. Any ideas?

Thanks

It seems to me that the first few eggs from a new layer are "duds". Keep an eye on her, and if this continues, we'll have to revisit it. I've had two hens whose bodies were not able to absorb enough calcium.
But for now, chalk it up to her being a newbie.

My DH brought one of the eggs in and showed the kids. When we tossed it out it did "pop" just like a water ballon. Thanks for the replys

You can still eat the rubber eggs...you can cook them and feed them back to the birds as a treat if you're squeamish. They taste the same, just they dry out if you don't have them in a sealed container and use them within a couple of days.
Yes, I have eaten them! And I'm not dead yet. LOL;)
