Where does everyone purchase their eggs from to incubate? My kids are interested in trying hatching as a summer project. I've seen them on many sites and was just overwhelmed. We always order chicks from ideal poultry since they arrive overnight. No clue where to start with eggs!

I do have laying hens and roosters but wanted to start with purebred rather than mixed.

For kids especially, I would buy eggs locally... usually on craigslist. Shipped eggs can have complications so I would only do it if I really wanted something I couldn't find locally.

For first hatchings, I would use my own (free) eggs. It can take a while to get a successful hatch, and feeling you've wasted money as well as dealing with dead chicks is adding insult to injury.

If you're determined to go purebred, put an add on your local Craigslist in the Farm and Garden section. I've hooked folks up with hatching eggs for broody hens on and off over the years that way. You'll just need to research the breed they're offering to be sure what they're giving you is really that breed. If you're going to wind up with mixed breeds anyway, just use your own.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I asked at the feed store this morning if they had any for sale. He said since it's for the kids, he would just give them to us :). He has production reds which I have 6 already and am very happy with that.
