Last year I went to a lady's house to see about some pheasants... and the lady had one lone turken hen with some poish chickens... so I asked her if I could buy it... suprisingly enought thats the only bird she would sell me..

any hoo... So I bought her home... I have 3 Araucana Roosters running loose... 1 with a tail and 2 without a tail. She would never let a male control her and she would fight off any advances the roosters made... She laid several eggs but never brooded and i decided to incubate a few and they were all infertle..

So I decided to lock the turken up with my black Araucana and 2 araucana hens...

she laid 15 eggs and I put the eggs under a surrogate... out of the 15 eggs... only 6 were fertile. The 1st chick has hatched today...

More pics to come as the chick gets older... Im curious to see who the chick will look like... so far, the chick has no feathers on its neck... not sure about the tail yet.

Thanks... Chick two has hatched... and has feathers on its neck...

So far... its..

1 chick with no neck feathers
1 chick with neck feathers..

wont know about the tail until feathers start to show...

You should be able to feel a tail, if it has one now. It will be soft and without feathers, but there should be a tail. Rumpless is a dominate gene. If the roo was pure for rumpless, he will pass on the trait to his offspring. I put in a batch of RIR eggs which had the possibility of being mixed with araucana and some of my chicks, which appear to be RIR have no tail. Others, that I know for a fact hatched out of RIR eggs, have no appearance of being RIR what-so-ever.

Humm... then if Rump less is a dominate gene.. then he is not pure... he would be "Rr" ... because 2 chicks if not mistaken have tails...

Does anyone know if featherless necks is a dominant gene or recessive gene... I would say dominant... and my hen is "Nn "cause out of 4 chicks.. 2 chicks do not neck feathers and 2 do have neck feathers...

Your Araucana hen look just like mine. It so beautiful! I never once thought to find on kinda close in comparison to mine, cute chick!
