Does anyone have any specific info about how these feeds differ?

We had our flock on Southern States but noticed a stinky smell/flavor in the eggs (some worse than others).

I switched to Purina and the stinkyness went away. Eggs are GREAT!

But the feed store that sells Purina is pretty far away

We do have another that carries Dumor, but I am afraid to switch them again in case the stinky egg problems come back.

Any idea what could have been in the SS feed that isn't in the Purina? Any idea if I might have these same issues with the Dumor feed?

Thanks.

I have no idea. Southern States and Purina are both vegetarian layer feeds, but Dumor is not. I have used SS and Purina, but prefer my co-op's feeds, which still contain decent quality animal protein and are cheaper. They carry Tucker Milling, ADM Alliance Pen Pals and Faithway Feeds.

Our Southern States feed here is filled with bugs most of the time, not sure where the heck they store it, but I will no longer buy it because I can't depend on the quality.

Interesting and odd then that SS makes for stinky eggs while Purina does not.

Well, since Dumor is not just a rebranding of Southern States, it is probably worth a try!

Thanks!

I guess I'm lucky, I have 3 feed stores with in appox. 25 mile radius. I have started my chicks with the Purina brand and would not switch. My hens eggs are great nice hard shells. I dont feel that the Purina is that much more then the feed stores brand.

I feed Southern States as well .... actually we just went back to it and I swear by it now. Our girls ran out and DH picked up feed at TSC (I think it was Dumor actually... yellow bag with a chick on it? Is that Dumor?)

Anyway - the eggs were not as good..the girls didnt look as healthy and happy on this feed either.

So ..back to SS brand we went! WHEW! Happier girls too!

I really don't know what was up with the SS and stinky eggs. Maybe my girls just have a sensitive constitution?

The only other thing I changed when I changed their feed was to take the straw bales out of their run that I had in as windbreaks. I can't imagine that would have had an effect.

Who knows.

I picked up the Dumor because TSC is way closer the Pickering Valley Feed and I had my two exhausted, hungry small children in the car - and the chickies were completely out of food, so I had to go today after work!

I bought 2 bags of Purina last time since the feed store is so far and when I went to fill their feeder last night, the second bag had molded

Thus the emergency today. Well, it will be a grand experiment.

Thank you for all the feedback!
