Purple /bluish antiseptic spray ?

we sprayed majority of our flock with this purple /bluish antiseptic spray because they were pecking themselves so bad drawing blood . ONE of the teens is acting funny and had purple color on her beak , SO I am sure she was getting a taste of this purple stuff .... ENOUGH to possibiliy KILL HER ?

Did you use Blu Kote? It says on the directions to keep away from mouth area BUT not sure how much of this stuff would be lethal. I sure hope your baby is ok! Hot pick would be a better bet if your using to stop pecking at one another. It has a bunch of non tasty herbs in it but is not dangerous to your chicken if they eat a little

YES it is Blu-kote . I sprayed only their behinds and never dreamed she would be peaking at herself . SHE DARN WELL DID .


We are trying to get her to DRINK and eat a little , hopefully will wash this down .

according to the labeling on blu-kote (which isn't marketed for use on chickens, so doesn't contain any information about precautions in that species, only horses and dogs):

For external veterinary use only. In case of serious burns, deep or puncture wounds, or if redness, irritation or swelling persists or increases, discontinue use and consult a veterinarian. Keep away from the eyes, mouth, nostrils, and mucous membranes. Do not spray in the eyes. Do not inhale. Do not use on cats. Prevent dogs from licking the treated area.

For animal use only.

Keep from the reach of children.

Use only as directed.

Not for use on food producing animals.

i suspect that the tiny dose a chicken could get with a peck is probably not particularly harmful, but there's not much you can do at this point to prevent toxicity.

H e said as for the condition of this bird , try adn give powdered Protein in food and water , he did NOT believe her condition was due to the blu kote , probably from being effected from all this peaking . Sounds logical

some people have found that blu-kote actually increases the incidence of pecking, since it creates a darker spot that attracts attention.

there's another product that i've used successfully with indoor domestic birds and ferrets called "bitter apple". it comes in a sprayer and is totally non-toxic, but has a horrible flavour. you might try that. it's not greasy or sticky like a salve, just a pump spray, no mess.

whether to trim their beaks or not is your decision, but it's not something i'd do. better to address the cause of the pecking (protein deficiency, overcrowding, etc.) than to leave them all comparatively defenseless in perpetuity.
