I have a broody hen who is a great mama, but I don't have any eggs I want her to hatch. I do, however, have 10 chicks coming around May 17th which I would love for her to raise.

I am thinking about putting them under her the night after they arrive... Am I asking for trouble? Do I need to have around 10 "eggs" under her for her to accept 10 chicks? Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

You know I have heard more good stories about putting chicks under a broody then bad.. But there are always exceptions.. I dont think it really matters how many eggs she has under her as i dont think chickens can really count.. I personnaly wouldnt want to put them under her unless i was right there to watch how she reacted.. Alot of broodies will just take any babies you put under them and some sadly wont..

I agree with Coopcrazy.

I agree. 3-4 eggs will keep her busy til the chicks come. Do it at night, as gently as possible, and BE SURE to be there when she wakes up. Like CC said, if she rejects them, you gotta rescue them, PRONTO. Good luck.......Pop
