Hi guys! I'm new here, and have only kept chickens for 2 years...there's so much to learn...still! It's kind of overwhelming. I do my research and experiment, but still need some moral support and good advice. I have a 6 mo old Lavender Orp roo, a 2 yr old GLW hen, an assortment of 6 mo old hens who have just begun laying itty bitty eggs, and 5 female 11 wk old chicks. My young layers include black and splash Andalusians, Cuckoo Marans, a Buff Brahma bantam, and a Spangled Hamburg. I just built a coop this summer, it was a beast! Had to ask for my hubby's help, and that is painful! I use a home made no-crow collar on my roo. I free range in the summer. Not sure how to handle the winter yet. They are always wandering over to the neighbor's yard (except the babies, they stay in the garden), even though it's fenced. I'm working on a new covered run, but I'm not sure how to cover it. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Also my older hens are picking on the babies, but the roo is protective of them. Thanks for listening, hope you can relate!

Love the Spangled Hamburg. I was interested in one of those myself. Welcome!

My coop’s run is completely covered on top, but only fencing on the sides so let sun in, so that my hens can peck about in the snow or rain- and will not be attacked by the hawks. They also have a lower shaft part of their run under their coop. I do close the door to their coop from the run every night, for extra protection and warmth, as there are many predators in my area especially at night
