A: If your birds are eating a complete feed, it is not necessary to supplement with vitamins in the water. The only time it may be necessary to do this is if the birds are not eating enough feed (usually when it’s very hot outside) or if there is an illness in your flock that is causing them not to eat.

Limit vitamin supplementation to no more than 10 days at a time. This is especially important if your vitamin supplement also contains electrolytes (minerals). The supplement plus the feed can provide too much of a good thing given enough time. Provide an equal amount of time off of the supplement before providing it again – 10 days on, at least 10 days off.

Here are a few summer tips to keep your flock cool and comfortable:

1. Provide at least one gallon of fresh, clean water per seven birds each day. During periods of warmer temperatures, chickens may drink up to twice as much water as during normal conditions.

2. Provide extra waterers and strategically place them in shaded areas.

3. Cover the coop run with shade cloths.

4. Create adequate air flow in the coop by opening all windows and roof vents.

5. Summer heat tends to reduce feed intake, so make complete feed a priority to maintain nutrition. Give fresh complete feed every morning and evening in a shaded area and only offer treats after the flock has finished the feed.
