So yesterday I noticed a bit of blood on the inside of my quail cage...I assumed it was an internal argument but couldn't find anyone who was hurt so I let it go. This morning I go out to the deck and there is the remains of a quail all over the deck. I then counted and there were only 14 birds left...which means 4 of them have been taken. Could be a cat or a racoon...I know we have both here wandering around.

I fanagled my other cage which has smaller wire so they are in that now. Hopefully whatever it was won't be able to get them through the half inch....am I dreaming?

probably raccoon. Set out some traps pronto.... and you can use the remains for bait....

darn coon!

They stayed safe last night....their new quarters is half inch all around. I will have time Monday to work on it some more but for now it seems to be ok.

This is why I ended up putting my cage into a big special built quail barn. Even with smaller wire, the coons were coming back and taking pieces of the quail they could squeeze through the holes. It was horrible finding quail missing legs and wings only to either be dying or dead from blood loss. And even managed to get a few heads on the jr birds.

Good Luck!

Scatter flour around your cage in the evening and see what footprints are left behind...

I'm good for something every now and then.

It sure sounds like a coon, or weasel... slippery little boogers they are!

An extremely effective method to get rid of raccoons is by mixing a fly poison called "Golden Malrin" with a little Pepsi or Coke. Place it in a small dish close to the coop. It is non-discriminatory so make sure that your animals are not able to get to it. An friend of mine thought he might have one or two coons coming around so he tried the fly poison method. Imagine his shock the next morning to discover over twenty coons and two skunks lying within 50 feet of his coop.
